 Inspired By a Textile Designer

Thank you for your visit.

Each painting is a special experience for me. Sometimes the images end up on the paper easily as I paint, and other times I work from a detailed drawing planned prior to picking up a brush. All my compositions have a connection to my first love of textile design. I have a special interest in a technique called "negative painting." You may notice that I often paint around the outside of a shape rather than paint it directly.

I divide negative painting into two categories. The first is a very planned composition with a detailed drawing in place before the first under-painting is applied. The second way is very intuitive in that a concept leads the artist to apply the underpainting in a certain way.  Both  approaches require practice, but I recommend that new painters begin with a drawing.

In order to be a successful watercolorist is is absolutely neccessary to understand color.    I have included information about my color clock theory on my web-site but  I will be offering a book that covers it thoroughly --coming up this spring.
